Key findings









Adult cigarette smoking
- 19% of men and 17% of women were current cigarette smokers
- 5% of adults currently used e-cigarettes
Adult alcohol consumption
- 31% of men and 16% of women drank more than 14 units in a usual week
- A minority of adults, 13% of men and 20% of women, had not drunk alcohol in the last 12 months
Adult overweight and obesity
- 27% of men and women were obese, and a further 41% of men and 31% of women were overweight
- 35% of men and 47% of women had very high waist measurements (greater than 102cm for men, and greater than 88cm for women)
Social care
- 21% of men and 30% of women aged 65 and over needed help with at least one Activity of Daily Living
- 18% of adults provided unpaid help or support to other people in the last month
Children’s physical activity
- 22% of children aged 5 to 15 did the recommended amount of physical activity for their age group (at least moderately active for at least 60 minutes a day)
- Among children aged 5 to 15 who had attended school in the last seven days, 79% had participated in activities such as walking and sports in the last week while in a lesson at school
Child overweight and obesity
- 28% of children aged 2 to 15 were overweight or obese
- 30% of boys were overweight, including obese compared to 26% of girls
Children’s smoking
- 4% of all children aged 8 to 15 in 2015 reported that they had ever smoked a cigarette, down from 19% in 1997
Children’s alcohol consumption
- 16% of children aged 8 to 15 had ever had an alcoholic drink, a decrease from 45% in 2003.
Well-being of 13 to 15 year olds
- 81% of 13 to 15 year olds had high or very high scores on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) well-being measure of life satisfaction
